The Biden Administration has given New York approval to use Floyd Bennett Field as a shelter for the migrants.
"We are grateful to President Biden for his support of this initiative and committed to continuing our advocacy on behalf of the people of New York," Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement.
Once the transformation is complete, Floyd Bennett Field will be able to accommodate more than 2,000 people seeking asylum. Hochul said such a large shelter will also make it more efficient to help people complete necessary paperwork.
"Ultimately the path out of this crisis is granting work authorization immediately, so these individuals can move out of shelter and into independent living arrangements," Hochul said.
