As New York City braces itself for former President Donald Trump to turn himself in for arraignment in Manhattan on Tuesday, some people are wondering if he can get a fair trial here. New York City Council Minority Leader Joe Borelli says there is only one borough where a fair trial would be possible: Staten Island.
Speaking on 710 WOR’s Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning program, Borelli, who represents the 51st District, says the numbers speak for themselves. “Staten Island, where half of people- adults- who are eligible to vote, about half, voted for Donald Trump. That means the other half didn’t vote for him or stayed home,” Borelli told Berman and Riedel. “That indicates that that’s a pretty fair jury pool to probably pull from.”
“In Manhattan,” Borelli then contrasted, “if you are part of the jury that convicts Donald Trump, you will never pay for another drink in any gin mill. They’d have streets named after you. Your building would put up a statue in front of it in your honor.”
Borelli also told Berman and Riedel that he has a bone of contention with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for wasting resources to investigate Trump. “This is coming at the same time, where they’ve been before the City Council, essentially saying that they don’t even have the money to prosecute actual crimes.”
