Bodega Workers Call For Changes To Bail Reform

A group of bodega workers rallied on Wednesday, calling for the state to make changes to its bail reform law.

They say shoplifting has become a major problem, because criminals steal from their stores and then are released back on the street without bail and are able to strike again.

“How many small businesses don’t want to do business in New York? It’s because of this. It’s because of the way we treat repeat offenders” spokesman Fernando Mateo said.

Earlier this week, Governor Kathy Hochul called for the legislature to make changes to bail reform that would give judges more discretion.
