Governor Hochul Declares Victory, Lee Zeldin Doesn’t Concede

Governor Kathy Hochul thanked voters on Tuesday night for making her the first woman ever elected governor of New York.

But as she celebrated a declared victory, Republican Lee Zeldin wasn’t ready to throw in the towel. He refused to concede, saying there were still more than one million ballots that needed to be counted.

As of Wednesday morning, Hochul led by 5 percentage points, or about 300,000 votes.

New Yorkers haven’t elected a Republican governor since George Pataki 20 years ago.
