Governor Kathy Hochul says the number of coronavirus cases in New York is beginning to fall for the first time in weeks.

“This is, to me, a glimmer of hope, a glimmer of hope in a time when we desperately need that,” Hochul said.

She said that hospitalizations are up, but the rate of the increase is slowing and they typically lag behind the cases.

“The seven day average is a little bit higher lagging behind, but looks like we might be cresting over that peak,” Hochul said.

Despite the progress, the governor said she’s not ready to lift the mask mandate in the state. It’s currently set to expire in February.
