New Yorkers are jumping for joy now that the promised Brooklyn Bridge bike lane is here.

Going across the bridge as a biker can be incredibly dangerous, so now that the bike lane is open, New York residents are incredibly happy about it. Construction for the project began in late June and now it has opened surprisingly ahead of schedule!

60,000 bike crossings happen per month on the Brooklyn Bridge and more than 10,000 pedestrian crossings per day. Now there is a two-way protected bike lane and the lane that was meant to be shared for bikers, joggers and walkers will now be pedestrians only. The construction involved “installing barrier segments, creating a new connecting bike path in Manhattan, including new traffic signal construction, adding protective fencing on the interior of the bridge, and implementing traffic changes to help avoid greater congestion in downtown.”

“Bridges for the People is a beautiful reimagining of New York City’s most iconic bridge,” said Mayor de Blasio in a press release.
