The woman in New Jersey is calling her story “a cautionary tale” after a man moved into a house she was renovating in Newark and refused to leave. The man allegedly changed the locks on the doors and claimed that it was now his house. Police did get involved and removed the man from the house, but he has since been released from custody.
The crazy part? After the man began squatting in the house she owns, TikTok user @regblackgrl got threatening letters from a “sovereign citizens” group, an extremist group known to falsely claim ownership of property due to supposed “ancestral ties.” According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, sovereign citizens believe “they get to decide which laws to obey and which to ignore, and they don’t think they should have to pay taxes.”
