Belmont Stakes Bans Medina Spirit After Failed Drug Test

147th Kentucky Derby

Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit is banned from Saturday's Belmont Stakes after failing a second drug test. The horse was again found to have an illegal amount of a drug used to reduce pain and swelling. This also sets the stage for Medina Spirit to possibly lose the Derby title. If that happens, it would be only the second time in the 147-year history of the race a horse lost the title due to a failed drug test. As part of that, the horse's trainer Bob Baffert, as well as any trainer directly or indirectly employed by his group, is suspended from Churchill Downs in Kentucky for two years.
