Internet Outages Disrupt Service To Thousands Across Northeast

Internet service across the northeast was subject to widespread outages Tuesday, with users from Washington D.C. to Boston reporting service interruptions.

Verizon reported shortly after noontime that it was addressing a fiber cut in Brooklyn, New York, though it was still unclear whether that was responsible for the bulk of the outages. Verizon customers were encouraged to check their MyFios app for further updates.

The telecom giant did not provide an estimate for when the cable would be repaired.

DownDetector reported that the outages were affecting Internet and cloud providers, plus a number of Google services, Facebook and other major networks.

School districts also reported challenges with virtual learning, stemming from the connectivity issues.

At least 21,000 users in New York City, Baltimore and Philadelphia complained about the outages, according to DownDetector.

Affected users said they had difficulty loading websites and dramatically reduced upload an download speeds. Problems were first reported at around 11:30 a.m.
