Customs Agents Seize 'Bushmeat' At New Jersey Airport

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents have reported seizing close to nine pounds of so-called ‘bushmeat’ at Newark Liberty International Airport from a U.S. citizen traveling in from Ghana. What is ‘bushmeat?’ It refers to underprocessed parts of various animals including bats, monkeys, rats and antelopes, which are typically smoked, dried or salted. It’s illegal because it can carry and spread infectious diseases. Agents destroyed the meats immediately after taking them into custody. People found bringing them into the states can face fines of up to 25-thousand dollars.
