NY Nurse Adopts Special Needs Boy She’s Taken Care Of Since Birth

A New York nurse has added one more to her family by adopting a special needs patient she’s been taking care of since he was born. Kelli Dabek brought nine-year-old Jashia home two years ago and became certified for emergency foster care when he was put in the system after his biological mother’s unexpected death.

Dabek has been caring for Jashia since he was born prematurely at 23 weeks with a range of health issues from chronic respiratory failure to epilepsy. He also has developmental issues and has spent years in a rehab home before coming to live with Dabek. Now he’s doing much better and loves riding his bike around the neighborhood and hanging out with his two college-age sisters.

“We knew what we had to do,” the mom says of her decision to adopt Jashia. “My whole family, we knew that’s what we wanted to do.”
