While quarantining with her family in Manhattan, Stefanie Trilling distracted herself with creativity. The wife and mom of two kids ages five and two was dealing with tough questions from her older child about the ambulances going by and if the people sick inside them were going to die of coronavirus. And when she didn’t have the answers, she turned to art as an outlet.
Trilling says she hadn’t ever painted much in the past, but one day she got out the paints and started painting characters. She started with one of the Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems, updating the children’s book cover into “COVID-19” and sharing it on Instagram for her friends. They loved it and demanded she do another cover, so she got busy and her project Children’s Books for Pandemics has since gone viral on social media.
Some of her titles that put a reimagined coronavirus twist on a classic kids’ book include “Pete the Cat and the Bad Corona,” “The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Time Home,” “Llama Llama Hasn’t Changed Pajamas,” “Cloudy With a Chance of Panic Hoarding,” and “Goodnight Zoom.” The book covers have also given Trilling a non-threatening way to talk about the situation with her young daughter. Now she hopes to sell prints and use part of the proceeds to help kids in hard-hit neighborhoods.
