A New York City teenager is having a virtual bar mitzvah because of the coronavirus.
Joseph Hershkowitz, 13, recently went to a bat mitzvah attended by a coronavirus patient, and was asked by his private school in the Bronx to self-quarantine just as his own bar mitzvah was coming up.
His rabbi offered the boy a solution, and suggested he have a virtual bar mitzvah over video chat. About 250 people attended Joseph's bar mitzvah last week, using the Zoom video conference tool.
Of course the mute feature had to be used on a few chatty kids, but the ceremony went off without a hitch.
