The last remaining phone “dinosaurs” are being removed in New York City.
Back in the day, the Big Apple had payphones at every turn… that was before smart phones. There are three thousand scattered across the five boroughs and they’re coming down by the end of the year.
The reason, the payphones are being removed? Complaints! New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson said they ranged from the phones being an eyesore, antiquated, a public safety issue, and they take up much needed sidewalk space.
As a sign of the times, some of the payphones will be replaced with Link NYC internet kiosks which provide free internet and phone calls to the public.
