City Considers Replacing BQE With Tunnel

The City Council will hold a hearing on Tuesday on a plan to replace the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway with a tunnel.

The road is in need of major repairs and one plan put forward by an engineering firm would build a 3-mile tunnel.

A second plan would create an enclosed roadway at ground level. That would result in less noise and pollution and would allow for the expansion of Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Both projects would take years to complete and would cost billions of dollars.
