De Blasio Wants To Legalize Basement Apartments

Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to allow New Yorkers to turn their basements into apartments.

It’s part of a plan he put forward during his 2020 State of the City address to increase affordable housing in New York. De Blasio plans to update the city’s zoning laws and introduce legislation to cut through the red tape.

It could also lead to tiny homes that are constructed on the property of homeowners.

De Blasio estimates it could create an extra 10,000 affordable homes over the next decade.
