NYPD: Overall Crime Down, Homicides and Hate Crimes Up

New York City officials are touting record low crime for the five boroughs, even as 2019 saw an increase in homicides and hate crimes.

Overall crime fell by nearly a full percentage point to the lowest level in modern history. However, homicides rose to the highest level since 2016 and hate crimes were up 20 percent.

The challenges are real. That uptick in murders is something we take very seriously, as well as uptick we've seen in felony assault and robbery,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

He said despite the increase in some crimes, there’s been sustained progress on driving down crime for a quarter-century.

“I'm convinced that we will drive back these problems and we will overcome them,” de Blasio said.
