Stranded Track Team Tweets Delta For Help, Airline Sends Private Plane

The track-and-field team from Ocean City High School in New Jersey was on their way to compete in the Disney Cross Country Classic in Orlando when their Frontier Airlines flight from Philadelphia was cancelled. The athletes, their family members, and coaches - 79 of them in all - found themselves stranded and the teens took to Twitter to try to get help.

While the adults tried to find a bus to bring them to Florida, the athletes started Tweeting with the hashtag #getocxctoDisney and tagging accounts including “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and Delta Airlines asking for help. Even though it was the middle of the night, Delta was ready to assist. They don’t normally fly from Philly to Orlando, so they pulled some strings and used a private plane usually reserved for politicians to get them there.

The runners made it to the track by noon and their performance surely made Delta proud. The boys’ varsity and junior varsity teams won first place and the girls’ varsity team came in second.
