28-Year-Old Man Jumps to His Death at Grand Canyon Skywalk

Grand Canyon's New "Skywalk" Opens With Grand Ceremony

Authorities in Arizona are searching for the body of a man who climbed over a safety barrier at the Grand Canyon Skywalk Saturday afternoon, apparently jumping to his death.

According to park officials, the 28-year-old man was visiting the tourist attraction on the Hualapai reservation outside Grand Canyon National Park around 4:30 p.m. when he jumped. A body recovery effort began Sunday morning, a Grand Canyon West spokesman said.

The Skywalk, which opened in 2007, is a horseshoe-like walkway that extends over the canyon for 70 feet over the canyon with a vertical drop between 500 and 800 feet below.

The man has not been identified by authorities who also have not given a motive for why the man jumped.

Two people died earlier this year at the Grand Canyon in two other separate incidents, including a tourist from Hong Kong who stumbled over the edge of a cliff while taking photographs, park officials said.
