Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova Meet In U.S. Open First Round In Flushing

Serena Williams will continue her quest for her record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title in Flushing nest week at the US open.

And it doesn’t get any easier as the road to that record goes through Maria Sharapova.

The women’s draw was unveiled yesterday for the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year where Serena drew Sharapova in the first round of the U.S. Open.

They have never met before the 16th round of any tournament. This will be their first U.S. Open matchup.

And while the name Sharapova conjures up images of a five-time Grand Slam champion, the 32-year-old has struggled of late—losing 18 straight matches to Williams—and falling to 87th in the rankings.
