An NYPD trial begins on Monday for the officer accused in the death of Eric Garner.
Garner died in 2014 while police tried to take him into custody on Staten Island for allegedly selling loose cigarettes. Garner resisted arrested and Officer Daniel Pantaleo brought him to the ground, with video showing Garner repeatedly saying “I can’t breathe.”
The question is whether Pantaleo used an unauthorized chokehold.
Prosecutors didn’t bring charges against Pantaleo and the Justice Department decided not to bring a civil rights case. He’s been on modified duty since the incident and could be fired at the end of the NYPD trial.
