6 Killed In Harlem Apartment Building Fire

Six people have been found dead, including four children, in a Harlem apartment building where a fire broke out early Wednesday morning.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said firefighters responded to the Samuel City Houses on Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard just before 2 a.m. They made it up to the fifth floor apartment where they were met by heavy flames.

They aggressively moved in extinguishing the fire as they did. When they reached the two rear bedrooms we found six occupants of that apartment deceased,” Nigro said.

The children are between the ages of 3 and 11.

“It’s never easy for our members. We’re in the business of saving lives and in this instance we were not able to and it’s very difficult for our members to deal with this loss also,” Nigro said. “Right now, our hearts are with these poor people and their friends and family.”

The fire was brought under control a couple hours after it started. It appears that it ignited in the kitchen and it isn’t considered suspicious.
