New York Smoking Age To Increase To 21

Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to sign legislation that would increase the minimum age to buy cigarettes and other tobacco products to 21 years old in New York.

"This year I proposed raising the minimum age for tobacco sales to 21 to help stamp out teen smoking and protect New Yorkers,” Cuomo said.

The current minimum age is 18 years old

“The lifelong health effects of tobacco cannot be overstated and in New York we are committed to doing everything in our power to keep tobacco products out of the hands of young people,” Cuomo said.

No word on when the increase would take effect.
