Questions About Subway Accessibility After Deadly Fall

A rally will be held in Manhattan on Wednesday, calling for greater accessibility at the MTA’s subway stations.

On Monday, 22-year-old mother Malaysia Goodson fell down a flight of steps at the Seventh Avenue and 53rd Street station while carrying her 1-year-old daughter in a stroller. The young girl was not hurt, but Goodson was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy that never should have happened,” Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted.

The incident has led to criticism of the MTA for a lack of elevators at its stations.Because of that, it makes it difficult for the disabled or parents carrying their children.

“The subway system is not accessible for everyone and that’s an environment the MTA should not allow,” de Blasio said.

Just 118 of the MTA’s 472 subway stations have elevators.Riders complain that even when a station has an elevator, it’s often broken.

Goodson lived in Connecticut and was visiting family and friends in New York City.
