New York Passes Dream Act

The New York State legislature has approved legislation that will help the children of undocumented immigrants when applying for college.

The legislation, named the Jose Peralta New York State Dream Act, will give those children access to state loans and grants.  The measure was named for former State Senator Jose Peralta, who died last year.

“As a key part of our Justice Agenda, we look forward to finally  making it law for all New Yorkers this year, for Senator Peralta and the  Dreamers,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

The measure has been  proposed for years, but always failed to get through the Republican  controlled State Senate.  Democrats were voted into the majority in  November and successfully approved the plan on Wednesday.

The program will help 6,000 students and will cost $27 million per year.
