Will Mayor de Blasio Run for President?

Mayor Bill de Blasio is fueling speculation that he could run for president in 2020.

On Wednesday he announced a plan to guarantee workers in New York City two weeks of paid time off, breaking news in a national outlet for the second straight day.  It has some wondering if he’s sending a signal that he plans to run.

“It's a signal that we need to make more progressive change in New York City but also a reminder that New York City can help lead the nation,” Mayor de Blasio said.

He didn’t specifically deny that he was thinking about a run for president and even said he’d be traveling to promote his agenda nationally.

“I'm focused on New York City but I know what we do here can have a huge impact on the rest of the country and I'm going to go out and preach the gospel.  I'm going to go out and talk about the things we're doing here and the impact that they can make.  I'm going to push other leaders to take on these ideas,” de Blasio said.

He was asked if that could include Iowa, which is the site of the first caucuses during the presidential election season.

“I'm not going to rule in or rule out any particular location but as we have specific trips we will let you know for sure,” de Blasio said.
