New Yorkers struggling to pay bills during the federal government shutdown don't have to worry about feeding their pets, thanks to the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The local animal advocacy group announced Tuesday that federal government employees who are missing paychecks due to the partial shut down can contact them at 631-382-7722 to arrange a pet food pick-up.
The SPCA says it will distribute the pet food for as long as it has supplies to spare.
The longest government shutdown in history was 21 days in 1996.
NY-based food banks are also offering food to struggling government workers.
There are approximately 50,000 federal workers in the Tri-State Area. If the shutdown continues through Friday, many of those workers will not get paid.
