A New York City police officer has been injured after being shot on Staten Island.
The officer may have been struck by friendly fire.
Cops responded to a call at 30 Bridge Court just before 11 o’clock on Sunday night when they encountered a knife-wielding man. The suspect yelled “shoot me” at officers multiple times.
“During this encounter, a Taser was deployed by at least one of the officers. We believe it struck the individual, but unfortunately it did not cause him to cease his attack,” Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said.
That’s when officers opened fire. Upwards of a dozen shots were fired, with multiple shots striking the suspect.
The suspect was pronounced dead.
The officer was transported to Staten Island University Hospital and is listed in critical, but stable condition. The officer is expected to be okay.
