Garbage Truck Hits and Critically Injures Bicyclist

A 43-year-old bicyclist is being treated for critical injuries at New York-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Hospital after being hit by a privately owned sanitation truck in Mid-Town Manhattan.

Accident reports released by NYPD officials said the bicyclist suffered severe injuries to his left arm and right leg when the truck and bike collided while heading southbound near the corner of 5th Avenue and 47th Street.

The accident comes on the heels of a new NYPD policy that has designated at least one police vehicle in every precinct to specifically conduct inspections on private carting trucks.

NYPD Chief of Transportation Thomas Chan told the New York Post that so far this year over 1,800 summonses have been written to private trash haulers.

The trash truck owned by Five Star Carting Company received five violations.

The 62-year-old driver was not arrested and according to DMV records has a clean driving record.
