Mayor de Blasio: Democrats Don’t Want Michael Bloomberg in 2020

Mayor Bill de Blasio says Democrats are looking for a “real Democrat” to challenge President Trump in 2020, not former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

“I do not think he fits what democrats are looking for right now,” de Blasio said.

Bloomberg announced this week that he was registering as a Democrat, leading to speculation that he was getting ready to run for president.  He was previously registered as a Democrat, but was first elected mayor of New York City as a Republican and later became an Independent.

“I just don't think Democrats are going to be attracted to someone who left our party 20 years ago and now has just come back,” de Blasio said.

The mayor gave his predecessor credit for being “consistently willing to stand up to Trump” and to put his money into helping Democrats will control of Congress in next month’s midterm elections.

“But I think more and more Americans understand that a lot of millionaires and billionaires have laughed all the way to the bank and I doubt they want to elect another billionaire after the experience they've just had,” de Blasio said.

Bloomberg is one of many Democrats who is thought to be considering a run for president in 2020.
