9th Inning Rally Brings Mets Back To Victory, 5-3 Over The D-Backs
Zack Wheeler got the start for the Mets against Clay Buchholz in the finale of the 4-game series in Arizona.
Mets got a leadoff double in the first from Brandon Nimmo and afyer he moved to third on an out, Todd Frazier hit a sac fly to plate him and make it 1-0 Mets in the first.
Wheeler cruised through the first three and didn’t give up a hit till the fourth. With one out, Goldschmidt walked Jake Lamb singled then David Peralta hit a ball to the top of the wall to score a run and the game was tied 1-1.
Wheeler loaded the bases on a walk with just one out, Ketel Marte grounded out to score a run, and Wheeler got the final out on a long fly ball to limit the damage and keep the game at 2-1 Arizona after 4.
Mets had an opportunity in the 6th with two on in scoring position with two out but Jay Bruce looked at strike three and the threat was over.
Second opportunity in the 7th. With two outs Reyes walked, then stole second, then Flores walked to bring up Brandon Nimmo with runners on 1st and third.
Nimmo copied the script of the 7th and took strike three looking and another chance went by the wayside.
Wheeler was done, but it was another really solid outing, 6 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs and 8 strikeouts.
Hansel Robles pitched the bottom of the 7th and with some nice defensive help from Jose Reyes got a double play and a long fly ball to keep the score the same.
Jeurys Familia came on, fresh off the DL, and got the first out. He then gave up a double to Jon Jay then a single to Paul Goldschmidt that was called ab out but overturned by review. The Dbacks had men on the corners and one out.
Jake Lamb blooped a single to pad the Arizona lead at 3-1.
Top 9, two out against the D-Backs closer Boxberger, Jose Reyes bunted his way on first, then took second on defensive indifference.
Jose Bautista knocked in a pinch hit double and the lead was 3-2, Arizona.
Brandon Nimmo blasted a no doubt two run home run, and Asdrubal Cabrera followed with a solo home run of his own, chasing Boxberger from the game and giving the Mets a 5-3 lead!
Robert Gsellman came in for the save attempt in the 9th.
Avila grounded to Cabrera who threw a little wide to first and Dom Smith made a move after the catch and the ball popped loose. After review it was confirmed as safe and the leadoff man was on.
Gsellman recovered quickly to get the next three outs to close the win and the Mets had back to back wins for the first time since May. 5-3 the final.
Mets fly off to the mountains, to start a 4-game series with the Colorado Rockies in Denver on Monday night, first pitch 8:40 pm, Mets on Deck starts at 6:05.
