Mets Fall To Marlins 5-1, Bautista Gets First Mets Hit
Just 45 minutes before the game the Mets signed former Blue Jays and Braves outfielder Jose Bautista to a contract. He landed in NY and made it to the ballpark in time to be inserted into the starting lineup
Zack Wheeler got the start but had some issues in the second, not all his fault. Miguel Rojas smacked an RBI single with no one out.
Jose Reyes picked up a bunt attempt by Caleb Smith, but he got confused, made a late throw to first, and the runner was safe, and he was charged with an error which would come back to haunt the inning.
Wheeler almost got out of the inning with just that one run, but after a pop out, a quick comebacker by JT Realmuto scooted out of his reach and into the outfield to plate two more runs, both unearned, and it was 3-0 Marlins.
Jose Bautista made his debut in the top of the second and smacked a leadoff double and eventually scored the Mets only run.
Neither team could put any runs on the board through the 6th as Wheeler pitched well & Robert Gsellman pitched a clean 7th.
Wheeler finished the day with 9 Strikeouts an only the one earned run.
AJ Ramos came on in the 8th and got into trouble. Derek Dietrich hit a two-run home run, and the Marlins had a 5-1 lead.
Mets had a golden opportunity in the bottom of the 8th. Two on with one out and Asdrubal Cabrera at the plate but he hit into a double play and the threat was gone.
Mets couldn’t get anything going in the 9th, and the four-game winning streak was over.
