Actress Cynthia Nixon Announces Run for Governor of New York

Actress Cynthia Nixon has officially announced her candidacy for governor of New York.

The 51-year-old actress, best known for her role as Miranda Hobbes in HBO's Sex and the City, has never before held elected office.

The self-described "progressive advocate" is challenging two-term democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in this year's democratic primary.

In a video posted to social media announcing her candidacy, Nixon talks about her humble upbringing by a single mother in New York City, where she's now raising her own children.

"I'm a proud public school graduate, and a prouder public school parent," she says over footage of herself with her children.

"I was given chances I just don't see for most of New York's kids today," Nixon continues. "Our leaders are letting us down. We are now the most unequal state in the entire country."

She goes on to discuss the income gap in New York State and the extreme poverty found in both upstate and urban areas of the state.

Nixon outlines her platform of fixing healthcare, ending "mass incarceration" and "fixing our broken subway."

The actress has spoken at many progressive rallies over the years, but never as a candidate for office.

Defeating Cuomo will be a tall task.

The fellow democrat is in his second term and has over $30 million in campaign cash to utilize, the New York Times reports.

If elected, Nixon would be New York's first female governor and its first openly gay governor. Her wife, Christine Marinoni, recently stepped down from a role in the New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration, reports the New York Times.

Two other former de Blasio strategists have reportedly signed on to help run Nixon's campaign.
