The MTA transit system was dealt another gut punch after a 62-page report from Comptroller Scott Stringer showed the city bus network has more major problems than the subway system.
Riders complain that the MTA bus system is slow, confusing, unreliable, and poorly connected. The report states that the bus system lost 100 million passenger trips in the past 8 years. Ridership has dropped by 16% since 2011.
According to Comptroller Stringer's office, the bus issues stem from old institutional failures by the city and inconsistent management practices.
MTA Chairman Joe Lhota blames the majority of the bus issues on inadequate traffic control and the failure to enforce traffic laws by the city.
The report shows that MTA buses are the slowest among the 17 biggest bus companies in the country.
The average speed for an MTA bus was clocked at 7.4 mph.
