President Trump is calling for suspected terrorist Sayfullo Saipov to face the death penalty.
In a late night tweet, Trump said “NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room. He killed 8 people, badly injured 12. SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!”
This came just hours after the president criticized the justice system and said we need punishment that’s quicker and tougher than what suspected terrorists currently face.
“What we have right now is a joke and it’s a laughing stock and no wonder so much of this stuff takes place,” Trump said.
Saipov is facing a number of charges, including providing material support to ISIS. U.S. Attorney Joon Kim said this was a crime driven by hate.
The suspected terrorist is accused of slamming a rented pickup truck into a crowd of people in Lower Manhattan.
Saipov had apparently been planning this attack for months. He also reportedly picked Halloween to strike because he knew there would be a lot of people on the streets.
