Malliotakis Blasts Mayor for Not Rooting for Yanks

Nicole Malliotakis, the Republican candidate for mayor, is criticizing Mayor Bill de Blasio for not rooting for the Yankees in the playoffs, saying it’s like the president not cheering for Team USA in the Olympics.

“It is a good thing when one of our teams advances and especially when they take the whole thing at the end of the day,” Malliotakis told WOR’s “Len Berman in the Morning.”

Mayor de Blasio said on Thursday that he wasn’t going to any Yankee games because he’s a fan of the Boston Red Sox.  Malliotakis said the mayor should root for the Yankees though, because it generates pride for the city and has a positive economic impact.

“I am a Yankee fan, there’s no doubt about it, but even when the Mets were in the World Series I rooted for the Mets because it was a home team.  It’s sort of like having a president who doesn’t root for Team USA in the Olympics, it’s kind of weird,” Malliotakis said.
