Cliffside Park Students Told to “Speak American”

A student walkout is possible at Cliffside Park High School in New Jersey on Monday after a teacher told students to “speak American.”

“They’re not fighting for your rights to speak Spanish.  They’re fighting for your rights to speak American,” the teacher is heard saying on video recorded in the classroom.

The video shows the students reacting in the aftermath of the comment.  One student is seen getting up from their desk and leaving the classroom.

"You're being racist.  I know how to speak English," one of the students is heard saying.

The same Twitter account that posted a video of the incident later later began to spread word of a protest.

“On Monday, October 16 CPHS will be protesting for our rights to speak and represent any of our cultures,” the message said.

The walkout is apparently scheduled for 4th period.
