Convict Charged With Murder 24 Hours After Prison Release

James Rivers wasted very little time after being released from Rikers Island to commit his latest crime. Less than 24 hours after the 52-year-old convict was set free, he was arrested again, this time for allegedly murdering his estranged girlfriend.

Police records show that Rivers called the victim, Gia Pender, and told her he was on his way over. Pender, fearing for her life went to her neighbor's apartment and gave her a note telling the neighbor that if anything happened to her to give the note to her mother.

The next morning James Rivers called the police to report that he found his girlfriend lying dead on the floor.

Detectives investigating the crime believe that Ms. Pender was strangled by Rivers as payback for sending him to prison for past domestic abuse charges.
