Hurricane Irma is the most powerful Atlantic storm on record with sustained winds of up to 185 MPH.
New footage released by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration depicts the storm eclipsing much of the Caribbean Sea with its massive swirling clouds.
Irma is expected to bash the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico Wednesday. It's already hit points in the West Indies.
The last hurricane to hit the United States while still a Category 5 storm was Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
