Mayor Bill de Blasio is showing support for the so-called Dreamers, after the Trump administration announced it would begin winding down the DACA program.
The policy put in place under former President Barack Obama prevents those who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children from being deported. There are 800,000 Dreamers in the country, including about 30,000 in New York City.
“So I have a message for President Trump – don’t mess with your fellow New Yorkers,” de Blasio said.
Governor Andrew Cuomo and Attorney General Eric Schneiderman have both threatened a lawsuit to prevent the Trump administration from rescinding the DACA program. On Tuesday night, protesters in New York City also rallied against the decision.
