NYPD Officer Shot and Wounded

An NYPD officer is expected to be okay after being shot in Brooklyn.

Officer Hart Nguyen, 30, was one of the responding officers called to a home on Ridgewood Avenue, where a mother reported her son was emotionally disturbed and was acting erratically.  That 29-year-old man pulled a gun on the officers.

“As the first officer approached the rear bedroom, the subject fired several shots, striking the officer several times.  He was struck once in the right arm and twice in the protective vest,” Police Commissioner James O’Neill said.

That led to a standoff at the home.  Police later found the man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Two guns were recovered at the scene.

Officer Nguyen was taken to Jamaica Hospital.  He is said to be in good spirits.

“This young man was definitely saved by his vest.  It made all the difference here that he was wearing a vest that stopped some of these shots and protected his life,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
