NY Senate Majority Leader Sought Alcohol Treatment

New York Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan has announced that he underwent treatment for alcohol abuse.

“Recently, I recognized that alcohol was becoming a crutch to deal with pressure I was under related to my responsibilities as Majority Leader of the New York State Senate. Therefore, I proactively took control of the situation and sought immediate help so I could overcome it and move forward,” Flanagan said in a statement.

The Majority Leader said he took this step to ensure that he wouldn’t be impaired in his ability to do his job or represent his constituents.  He said seeking treatment will allow him continue serving and giving back.

Flanagan received support from fellow lawmakers, including Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“NY Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan is setting a brave example by getting help.  We stand beside him in full support,” de Blasio said on Twitter.
