Hundreds of people filled Times Square on Wednesday night, protesting President Trump’s ban on transgender individuals serving in the military.
“I am appalled. I am angry and I am going to fight like hell on behalf of my transgender brothers and sisters,” City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito said.
Protesters criticized the president’s policy and claimed he’s rolling back time by reversing an Obama-era order that allowed transgender individuals to serve.
Trump announced the move in a series of tweets on Wednesday morning.
“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you,” the president said.
Many aspects of the plan are still unclear. That includes how the policy will be implemented and whether it will impact transgender individuals currently serving.
