De Blasio Opposes Food Ban on the Subway

Mayor Bill de Blasio is coming out against a plan that would ban riders from bringing some food on the subway.

“I don’t think it’s fair to people to say you can’t eat on the subway,” de Blasio said.

MTA Chairman Joe Lhota suggested the ban after a track fire in Harlem that disrupted subway service.  He said that garbage from food sometimes winds up on the tracks, which can then cause a fire.

But De Blasio said often, the only time New Yorkers have to eat is when they’re on the subway.

“We’re all incredibly busy in this city,” de Blasio said.

The MTA is reportedly working on a plan that would ban some foods from the subway system.  It’s unclear which foods would be on a banned list.
