Blood Shortage Is Critical

New Yorkers and New Jerseyites, stick out your arms and save lives.  Blood donations have reached a critically low level.

The New York Blood Center tries to maintain a 7-9 day supply of fresh blood at all times, but with summer vacations and holidays they are scraping the bottom of their bags.

Blood donation is easy and only takes about an hour. Every healthy person over 16-years-old is eligible to donate. Plus every donor is given a free mini-medical test.

All donated blood is tested for blood type, hepatitis, HIV, syphilis, and other transmittable diseases.

You can locate the blood donation center nearest you by going to www.nybloodcenter.org  or by calling 1-800-933-2566.

High School and College students can earn up to a $500 hundred dollar scholarship by hosting a blood drive.

Type O negative blood is in particularly low supply and is critically needed because of its ability to be transferred to all blood types.
