A fraud trial begins in Brooklyn federal court on Monday for the person known as “the most hated man in America.”
Martin Shkreli, 34, is facing charges of security fraud for allegedly running a Ponzi scheme that cheated investors out of $11 million. Dozens of witnesses are expected to be called in a trial that could last several weeks.
If convicted, Shkreli faces up to 20 years in prison.
Shkreli was the CEO of a drug company known as Turing Pharmaceutical. He drew widespread criticism for raising the price of a life-saving HIV drug from $13.50 to $750 per pill.
