A 12-year-old girl is dead and another has been critically injured after they were pulled from the water in Belmar, New Jersey on Thursday night.
They were swimming near Ocean Avenue and 9th Avenue without any lifeguards on duty and apparently without any adult supervision. The girls were cousins.
Police officers jumped into the water in search of the girls.
“It's a lot when they take a child out that's lifeless and face down so they're heroic in their actions, but it takes an emotional toll on them,” Mayor Matt Doherty said.
One of the girls was pronounced dead. The second is on life-support at Jersey Shore Medical Center.
