Democrats in New York are criticizing President Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey.
In a letter, Trump said he fired Comey because of the FBI Director’s handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails. Democrats suspect the decision may be tied to the FBI’s investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer said an independent investigation is needed.
“I have said from the get go that I think a special prosecutor is the way to go, but now with what’s happened, it is the only way to go,” Schumer said.
In his letter, Trump claimed that Comey told him three times that he wasn’t being investigated. The president claimed the firing was needed to restore trust and confidence in the FBI.
“Trump is throwing our democracy into chaos by trying to shut down an investigation,” Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said on Twitter.
