Queens Democratic Councilman Danny Dromm is backing a bill that has 25,000 landlords up in arms.
Mr. Dromm wants landlords to be required to file bed bug infestation histories with the Department of Housing Preservation and Development and to distribute the documents among the tenants in the building.
The current law requires the landlord to notify new tenants of bed bug problems before they move in.Joseph Strasburg, President of the Rent Stabilization Association calls the new bill "regulation overkill."
Under the proposed bill landlords would not have to release the exact apartments that have been infested, but they would have to give the number of units in the building that have been or are being treated for bedbugs.
