NYC Firefighter Dies in Queens

The FDNY is in mourning.

William Tolley, 42, died on Thursday while battling a fire at an apartment building in the Ridgewood section of Queens.  The 14-year veteran fell five stories to his death, but it’s still unclear if he was on the roof or in a bucket being used by the FDNY.

“There was nothing about the fire that really had anything to do with the accident that occurred,” Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.

Tolley was rushed to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Commissioner Nigro called this a “terrible tragedy” and promised an investigation into what went wrong.  In addition to serving with the FDNY, Tolley was a volunteer firefighter with the Bethpage Fire Department.

Tolley leaves behind a wife and an 8-year-old daughter.
